An award winning experimental narrative based on the true story of a young German traveler who lived and died at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The circumstance of this womans strange demise is the focus of The Tourist, which portrays a haunting story of emotional isolation, cultural displacement, and mental breakdown.
Inspired by a brief newspaper report, the story was scripted combining fragments of factual information with imagined scenarios. The Tourist was shot on location in Queens, New York, at John F. Kennedy International Airport and the surrounding area. Footage was gathered with a small-format video camera that allowed for anonymity within the public domain of the airport. The pseudo-documentary style of The Tourist captures the spectacle of the airport environment and creates a backdrop for the wanderings of the protagonist. Sound design by Bill Seery, further enhances the pervasive mood of disorientation, and psychological remove through the enhancement and manipulation of environmental sound elements.
